Intel Corp is cautiously making a move into the wireless mobile device market, with some prototype devices for home use. The Intel architecture labs has developed a net-enabled, pen-driven wireless workpad device. The company has been testing the devices with householders in Portland, Oregon. An Intel spokesperson likened them to networked, electronic books, but stressed that the devices were simply experiments and may not end up on the market. The spokesperson said that the tests represent a new direction for the company’s AnyPoint system, which uses the household telephone lines to link devices in the home. Intel has previously said that it was working on a wireless system, using technology from Proxim Inc, based on the Home RF (radio frequency) standard, called SWAP, which it plans to launch in early 2000.
