UK electronics retail chain Dixons Group Plc has launched a free internet service called Freeserve, and has its eye on potential future revenues from electronic shopping. The free CD is initially available only from the 900 Dixons, Currys, PC World and The Link retail stores, but there are plans for a web download and further distribution partners. Dixons is partnering with Energis Plc and its subsidiary internet service provider Planet On Line for the network and connectivity. Electronic shopping services are likely to concentrate on books and music, and won’t be designed to cross-sell Dixons’ other products, according to Mark Danby, general manager of Freeserve.
