Novell Inc is licensing compiler and other technology from Intel Corp to ‘hot-rod’ its JVM Java virtual machine for running Java- based server applications on 32-bit and 64-bit Intel platforms. It wants to make NetWare the fastest Java platform to attract ISVs and create the pre-eminent platform for running Java applications. Novell already plans to release a JVM for use with the TCP/IP-plumbed NetWare 5 ‘Moab’ operating system due later this summer. The new JVM, including the Intel work will be called NetFire and is due next year. Novell is already claiming its JVM is the fastest around having put it through its paces some months ago (CI No 3,374). Intel says the deal is not exclusive and is similar to the one it struck recently with IBM Corp on client- side Java development.
