As the number of people using mobile devices increases the applications that run on them become more and more important. However some experts question if mobile apps will help drive the internet in the future.
Mobile has grown significantly over the past few years, rising quicker than other mediums like radio and TV.
According to Jeremy Silver, chairman of Golant Media Ventures, mobile has shown to be resilient in economic downturn. Speaking at the Digital Shoreditch festival in London, Silver said 2012 total global revenues from mobile has already hit $1.5 trillion, just over 2% of global GDP.
"Mobile is the biggest computing platform going forward," said Silver. "Fewer people have access to water than mobile phones."
Mobile is projected to be one of the main drivers on the internet over the next few years. "We’d rather leave the house without our wallet than our mobile wallet," says Silver.
Beyond analyst expectations, video streaming has become the leader in internet traffic, rising over file sharing, video calling, online gaming and even email.
Video streaming is expected to be largely responsible for a significant percentage of future internet traffic as well. Silver also predicts that mobility and location will help the future growth of the internet.
Mobile traffic has not just seen growth in Western countries; China, India and Latin America are also seeing significant growth as well. These countries are expected to see a similar trend in future mobile adoption as their Western counterparts.
