Chip maker Intel has introduced a new cable gateway application, DOCSIS 3.0, that the company says is capable of achieving 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) downstream data speeds.

The new gateway application uses Intel Puma 6 architecture to achieve the 1Gbps speed by bonding with up to 24 DOCSIS channels. Intel Puma 6 has an upload speed that is double current-generation DOCSIS modems.

The architecture also provides OEMs with flexibility to customise their products to fit different multiple system operator (MSO)-required and optional features such as high data rates, wireless communications, power down modes and telephone support.

DOCSIS 3.0 will enable service providers to meet consumer demand and offer new services while extending their extensive network investments.

The DOCSIS 3.0 specification enables MSOs to offer several users with access to bandwidth-intensive experiences such as streaming video or online gaming using their existing network infrastructure and DOCSIS 3.0 equipment, said the company.

Intel Service Provider Division general manager Alan Crouch said the company is now providing cable gateway applications with 1Gbps capability.

"Service providers can now deliver on consumer demands for higher broadband speeds, supporting a proliferation of new devices, services and experiences," said Crouch.
