Sterling Commerce Inc yesterday closed its $200m acquisition of remote software company, Xcellenet. The acquisition has resulted in Xcellenet being absorbed into Sterling’s Communications Software Group under the guise of The Managed Systems Division. Sterling has taken over 250 of the acquired company’s employees, with only a handful of lay-offs expected. As for the remote access company’s products, RemoteWare has been re-dubbed Connect:Remote, whereas RemoteWare Express will be known as Remote:Manage. Sterling, which already has an OEM contract with Xcellenet, will also weave Xcellenet’s remote access management software into all of its products in an effort to provide management tools for mobile and remote users of electronic commerce applications. Sterling’s future plans for Xcellenet include extending client support for Unix to AIX and HP’s Unix.
