LG Semicon says research work it’s licensed from Seoul University to examine ways of producing 0.01 micron, terabit memory chips (CI No 3,449), pertains to carbon nano-tubes. Carbon nano-tubes, discovered in 1991 are used in scanning tunneling microscope technology – which touches and well as looks – and is used to re- arrange atoms. It is regarded a promising way of developing new lithographic processes to create nanometer-sized gates and wiring. LG says the University research found the nano-tubes themselves exhibit semiconductor properties and that based upon the size of the structure it is conceivable these could be used for terabit scale devices. It says the manufacturability of such devices has not yet been determined.
