San Jose-based chip maker Cypress Semiconductor Corp said Tuesday it has acquired privately-held Anchor Chips Inc for $15m. San Diego-based Anchor designs and markets peripheral microcontroller chips for Universal Serial Bus devices such as printers, scanners, xDSL modems and digital cameras.

Cypress says the acquisition has already closed and should be accretive to 1999 earnings, excluding the effects of related one- time charges that will be taken in the second quarter. Analysts surveyed by First Call are expecting second-quarter net income of $0.12 per share, against a net loss of $6.7m, or $0.07, in the year-ago quarter.

Prior to the acquisition, Cypress’ offerings for peripherals were limited to silicon and tools for so-called low-speed devices such as mice, joysticks, and keyboards. Cypress already claims to be the leading supplier of peripheral controllers in the USB market, with 50% market share.
