Hewlett-Packard Co has said that it will port Sun Microsystems Inc’s Java3D application programming interface to its version of Unix, HP-UX. Sun says that with major Unix workstation rival HP in the fold, 95% of the workstations in the world will be able to run Java3D.

Ken Tallman, senior product manager for Java3D, said that HP was an important vendor to have supporting the API because of its strength in the graphics workstation and enterprise computing market. The API, part of the Java 2 platform, is already available for Solaris SPARC, Windows and NT and is also being ported to SGI’s IRIX Unix and Linux. Tallman expects that the API will be used in developing networked, collaborative applications in the CAD/CAM and electronic design field. รก
