Chesapeake Information Sciences Inc, a privately held supply chain planning and scheduling software house that has up until now kept a very low profile, says it is still currently an independent company, despite various analysts’ reports identifying it as a target for acquisition. The reports say that both Baan NV and Manugistics Group Inc have been considering the acquisition of the company (CI No 3,334). Chesapeake spokesman Walt Beadling said that although he couldn’t deny that we’ve had discussions with people, Chesapeake is still an independent company, and my assumption is that’s how it will stay. Based in New Providence, New Jersey, Chesapeake was founded in 1992, and has built its business on the Mini software suite of advanced planning and scheduling software, running on various Unix and Windows NT-based hardware. The company says it’s profitable, growing nicely, has no debt, and has some major customers, including Dupont Inc and Exxon Corp. It competes with Manugistics, and i2 Technologies Inc, SAP AG and Peoplesoft Inc, though less so with Baan, said Beadling.
