Performance management firm Riverbed Technology has collaborated with VMware to help enterprises to speed up their migration to the cloud, enabling businesses to increase efficiency and improve productivity while reducing costs.

The new collaboration will enable the Riverbed wide area network (WAN) optimisation applications to accelerate virtual machines (VMs) moving between clouds with VMware vCloud Connector.

Riverbed and VMware applications are combined to enable the cloud service providers to maximise their cloud computing applications by empowering their customers to utilise their existing IT investments.

The applications will also help companies realise the benefits of utilising multiple cloud environments without compromising performance.

The VMware vCloud Connector is built upon VMware vSphere 5 and VMware vCloud APIs.

It will allow customers to connect VMware vSphere and VMware vCloud Director-based private and public clouds and manage them through a single interface.

The Riverbed WAN optimisation application delivers enhanced performance when moving large VMs across the WAN, while giving the ability to reduce the time to move VMs and costs associated with WAN infrastructure.

Other recent collaborative developments include the Steelhead EX appliance with Virtual Services Platform (VSP), a platform that runs virtual services for greater consolidation in branch offices, and Virtual Cascade Shark, which provides real-time visibility to manage and troubleshoot application performance as it traverses the virtual switch in vSphere environments.
