RealityMan, co-author with Epsilon of the UltraHLE Nintendo 64 emulator, has announced his retirement from the emulation scene. The programmer says he has decided to look at new projects outside emulation, and that the threat of legal action over UltraHLE was not the sole reason for his decision. Nintendo plans to sue RealityMan and Epsilon. The company says that because PCs don’t accept Nintendo cartridges, the only purpose of the emulator is to play pirated game ROMs – a violation of Nintendo’s intellectual property rights. Nintendo 64 emulators have been written before, but even Nintendo says UltraHLE is the best yet seen. RealityMan says the emulation scene, once strictly for hobbyists, has been corrupted by the peddlers of illegal ROMs. Quite frankly I am sick of this, the increased backbiting and derogatory comments being made, he wrote. He says he will look for work in the games industry and perhaps move to Canada. á
