Softway Systems Inc has changed the name of its OpenNT Unix-on-NT software to Interix. It says it needed a single ‘class 9’ worldwide software trademark but there are already too many other product names which include ‘Open.’ It says people were also confused about whether OpenNT it includes a copy of Windows NT – it does not. Softway also faces increasing competition now that New Jersey company Global Technologies Ltd has brought to market U/Win (CI No 3,381), developed by David Korn, author of the Unix’s KornShell, claiming that it uses a real Posix 1003.2-conformant KornShell and not public domain code. U/Win and DataFocus’ NutCracker compete with OpenNT. Softway also announced a new 2.2 release of the software which now supports OpenGL, ODBC, additional web features and Hummingbird Exceed PC X Windows emulation software.
