UK hand-held computer company Psion Plc has issued a statement to shareholders saying it is in talks to establish a joint venture to deliver a wireless information device. The London-based company is thought to be discussing the venture with more than one other company, which, if it all comes off, will see Psion entering the smart telephone business. This will throw Psion into competition with the likes of Nokia Oy and its Nokia Communicator product. Analysts predict the smart phone market will reach 630 million users by 2001 and Psion wants to get a piece of the action in what it describes as an exciting market. The company will not say when it will divulge more information, but suggests we watch this space. Psion shares were trading at 281.5 pence as we went to press, up from 207.5 pence last week.
