Technology Builders Inc, an Atlanta, Georgia-based requirements management software company, has acquired San Francisco-based Bender & Associates Inc and its technology, the SoftTest requirements-based testing tool. TBI says the merger will see the first combination of requirements management and testing tools. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Richard Bender, president of the company, will report directly to Nick Kavadellas, president and CEO of TBI, and help lead product marketing and direction for the combined company.

Requirements management tools attempt to help establish a common understanding between customers and software developers of the requirements of a project. The SoftTest tool is intended to stabilize system definitions and generate the minimum number of tests needed for the maximum functional coverage of software code. The technology will be integrated into TBI’s Caliber-RM product, an internet-based collaborative requirements management system. SoftTest also links into Mercury Interactive Corp’s WinRunner functionality testing tool, and with other playback software testing tools.

TBI Caliber has sold on an OEM basis by Select Software Tools Inc, which recently went into liquidation. TBI was reselling Select’s Component Factory tool in return. It claims a client base of 300 customers, including IBM Corp, Lanier Worldwide and Hewlett-Packard Co. Competitive products include Rational Software Inc’s Requisite Pro, Rhapsody from I-Logix Inc, Cradle/Req from Structured Software Systems Ltd, Doors from QSS Ltd, RDD-100 from Ascent Logic Inc and Slate from TD Technologies Inc.
