Compaq Corp is touting the fact that it has shipped its 3 millionth PC server since it got into the PC server business back in the mid-1980s. Compaq started peddling PC servers using Intel motherboards in 1989 and it took until 1996 to reach 1 million units. Two years later, it had hit 2 million units. Compaq says that a third of all servers shipped are ProLiants. It says it has shipped more PC servers than IBM, Hewlett-Packard and Dell combined, giving it the largest PC server installed base in the world. Planet Online, a wholesale ISP based in the UK that is the backbone of Dixons’ Freeserve, took delivery of the 3 millionth machine, an eight-way ProLiant 8500 that uses the new Profusion chipset that Compaq developed in conjunction with Intel. á
