Hitachi Semiconductor Inc has put together a 1 GByte SDRAM dual inline memory (DIMM) from 256Mbit SDRAM components, which is designed for use in workstations and high-end servers running computer aided design software or graphics for films. The company is also using the 256Mbit SDRAM components in 512MB DIMMs. The 256Mbit chips have the same density as four 64MB chips, but promise a 66% drop in comparative power consumption. Sample examples of 1Gb SDRAM will be available in the fourth quarter, before going into mass production early next year. The 512Mbyrte module will ship toward the end of the year, Hitachi said in a statement.
