Advanced Micro Devices Export Sdn Bhd, the Malaysian subsidiary of AMD, said it will spend RM 1bn ($265m) on capital investment in its Penang semiconductor plant over the next five years. This doubles investment to date in the 27-year-old plant and represents a third of AMD’s planned international investment this year.

AMD also plans a transfer of the company’s latest technology to allow production of the high-end AMD-K7 microprocessor by the end of the year. The plant will also gear up to assemble the C4 flip-chips required to make AMD-K6 microprocessors, and specialized grid arrays. The Malaysian Government has granted the company pioneer status for these products for a period of 10 years.
