The service will be rolling out over the next few weeks. "Anyone who already selected an email address will not be affected," Facebook noted in their statement.
The new capability links your timeline on Facebook and your Facebook email. This will make finding a person’s Timeline on Facebook much easier. The new service will also make it much easier for others to use your Facebook email to get in contact with you.
So if a user’s Vanity URL is facebook.com/janesmith.19, then their Facebook email address will be janesmith.19@facebook.com.
The company says it will start sending out notifications to users that have not already specifically verified their vanity URL and Facebook email address.
The social networking site gave out specific usernames in 2009 that allowed users to choose their own Vanity URL in order to make searching for friends easier than relying on their search tool.
Then in 2010 the site launched their messaging platform, providing users with an email address that others could use to send messaged to a certain Facebook account from outside of the network.
Whether the site will increase interaction with the new service is yet to be seen as many Facebook users already have Gmail and other email accounts.
