Iomega Corp is carrying on the legal battle started by the now defunct Syquest Inc against removable storage systems company Castlewood Systems Inc. Yesterday, Iomega filed a complaint in the US District Court for Utah, charging Pleasanton, California based Castlewood with patent infringement, trademark infringement and unfair competition.

Castlewood was originally started by Syquest’s founder and former chief executive officer, Syed Iftikar. Iftikar resigned from Syquest in August 1996 (CI No 2,980) and immediately founded Castlewood. Syquest sued the company in November 1997, claiming misappropriation of trade secrets and unfair competition, and seeking an injunction to stop the shipment of disks (CI No 3,292). Iomega acquired what was left of bankrupt Syquest earlier this year.

Iomega claims infringement of two removable storage technology patents and misuse of Iomega’s trademarks. No hearing date has been set.
