Compaq, which is marketing both its own and Digital’s storage products under the Compaq Storage Works banner, plans a September or October launch for its so-called Enterprise Back-Up Solution, which is the company’s first step toward delivering storage area network products. The Enterprise Back-Up Solution will be a fiber channel system for NT and NetWare, designed to provide centralized back-up to distributed environments. Compaq also brought out an UltraSCSI hub adapter for sharing data on a StorageWorks RAID Array subsystem with a maximum of four servers and a new version of Digital NetWorker storage management software. The company has also cut by 30% the price of its StorageWorks solid state disks – which it conceded have never been a great seller.
