The State University of New Jersey Rutgers has partnered with IBM to launch a new high-performance computing (HPC) centre, which is part of the newly created Rutgers Discovery Informatics Institute (RDI²).
IBM will provide supercomputing equipment and software necessary for the HPC centre in the project’s first phase.
HPC Centre is powered by an IBM Blue Gene/P supercomputer.
The university has also agreed to purchase hardware and software from IBM and to sign a three-year maintenance agreement for the equipment.
The new centre creates an HPC resource with support for industry in New Jersey and the surrounding region and also provides HPC resources to Rutgers faculty members and regional organisations, who are expanding their use of large data sets.
It helps in educating the New Jersey workforce and Rutgers students in working with advanced analytics and HPC centre, the company said.
Rugters has named the two Blue Gene/ P racks as ‘Excalibur,’ playing off the university’s sports mascot, the Scarlet Knight.
