Steve Ballmer, Microsoft Corp’s recently installed president, told attendees at Tibco Software Inc’s San Francisco conference yesterday that the release of Windows 2000 was still on track for release at the end of this year. Ballmer refused to give a definite commitment on a shipment date, saying that the most important thing was that Microsoft ships a solid production release product. He listed clustering, large memory support, Java objects, the Active Directory, new security and remote management as the standout features of the new operating system. And, said Ballmer, Windows 2000 would also be the basis of the company’s application server strategy. Windows 2000 includes application server components such as message queuing, transaction server, objects and database connectivity, integrated in with the security and directory services.
