The telecom company T-Mobile USA said that it will cut 1,900 jobs, about 5% of its workforce, across the US as it consolidates its call centres and closes seven out of 24 of them in a bid to reduce costs and remain competitive.
The call centres to be closed are in Allentown, Pa.; Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Frisco, Texas; Brownsville, Texas; Lenexa, Kansas; Thornton, Colo. and Redmond, Ore.
As 3,300 people working at these centres will be laid off, T-Mobile said it is planning on hiring up to 1,400 people at the remaining 17 centres, according to the Associated Press.
T-Mobile CEO and president in a statement said these are not easy steps to take, but they are necessary to realise efficiency in order to invest for growth.
Workers from the closed down call centres will have an option to transfer to the remaining call centres.
The telecom operator is said to have lost 802,000 subscribers on contract based plans in the fourth quarter of 2011.
The company said it will restructure other business units during the second quarter.
