A spokesperson for Intel Corp has denied persistent industry rumors that it will announce the pricing of its new Katmai and Tanner chips on September 14. Nor would the spokesperson confirm if the price of Intel’s Celeron 266MHz component – currently $86- would be drastically reduced as has also been suggested. If the prices of the first 3D graphics Katmai-New Instruction (KNI) list processor (CI No 3,412) and Tanner (CI No 3,460) – a Katmai-enabled version of the Xeon chip for servers are announced in September, this would mean to an earlier release date for the chips than had been expected and a rapid redrawing of the Intel roadmap. However, the Intel spokesman denies that any changes are afoot, saying that Katmai and Tanner are due in the first quarter of 1999.
