Lotus Development Corp has collaborated with Montreal, Canada-based Alis Technology on machine translation (MT) technology for its Domino Designer product. The tie-up – announced at Lotusphere Europe 98 in Berlin – will see a set of MT features within Domino Designer Release 5 called Domino Global WorkBench (DGW), allowing translation of Domino application and web page content into various different languages. In practice, this might mean that a discussion group within the Domino framework could be held in several different languages, although a Domino spokesman could give no percentage figure on how accurate any such translation would be. The Canadian company will also cooperate in developing and marketing speech applications for Domino. Domino Designer 5 will ship in the fourth quarter 1998, there is no word on pricing yet.
