The Australian Government has revised the submission it put to the US Government last month on the issue of the control of internet domain names. The changes come in the wake of the recent visit to Australia of US President Bill Clinton’s internet advisor Ira Magaziner. Despite the toned-down submission, Richard Alston, Australia’s minister for communications, told a press gathering in Melbourne that Magaziner had been briefed on Australia’s concerns in fairly strong terms. Alston is confident that the US understands the Australian position, and that, like Australia, it wants the domain name exercise to be international in focus. Also from Richard Alston yesterday, came the announcement that the government will spearhead a public relations and advertising campaign to encourage Australian businesses to take up electronic commerce. The campaign will lead up to the grandly named National Information Economy Day on September 5.
