S3 Inc is celebrating two OEM deals for its graphics accelerators notebook computers from Compaq Computer Corp and Toshiba America Information Systems Inc. Compaq will use Santa Clara, California- based S3’s ViRGE MX 3D graphics accelerator for its new Armada 7800 notebook PC, through Intel Corp’s Advanced Graphic Port bus running at 66MHz. The Armada 7800 uses Intel’s 266MHz Mobile Pentium II processor. Prices start at $5,200. Toshiba will also use the ViRGE MX accelerator for its Satellite Pro 490 and Tecra 780 Pentium II-based notebooks. Satellite Pro prices start at $3,500. S3 has been cultivating notebook systems vendors recently, and has been working with Microsoft Corp to incorporate its DuoView technology into the multi-monitor interface for Windows 98. That means notebook users can use the LCD monitor on the notebook simultaneously with a larger desktop display monitor.
