The European Union has decided to abandon its anti-dumping complaint against Korean dynamic RAM suppliers, according to the Korea International Trade Association. The European Electronic Component Manufacturers Association, which filed a complaint in July claiming that aggressive pricing from Korean companies had damaged European rivals, has now withdrawn the charge, according to sources at KITA’s Brussels branch, and reported in the Korea Herald. The reason is apparently that it fears harming its improving relationships with Japanese chip makers. The EU had told KITA that the compliant must include both Korean and Japanese companies. Korea has rapidly increased its share of the European DRAM marketplace, from 14.7% in 1990 to 47% in 1997, largely at the expense of Japanese companies, who saw their share of the market reduced from 45.3% to 27.8% during the same time period.
