Dutch application server WAPMagic, a provider which specializes in WAP (wireless application protocol)-based services, has taken 5m guilders ($2.3m) of first round funding from Gilde IT, a Utrecht-based venture capitalist.

The Amsterdam-based ASP has already made an name for itself as major service provider on incumbent telco KPN’s information portal, but now sees its best opportunity is pursuing Europe’s mobile operators as they prepare to create mobile commerce services that will drive demand for higher-speed, data-oriented networks.

WAPMagic has built a suite of WAP-oriented mobile application development tools, network systems and maintenance facilities which will make it easier for content providers to package their information for users of mobile phones and other wireless devices. With content providers on board, WAPMAgic will then market its ASP services to mobile operators as a content instant-fix for mobile data services.
