Prosecutors in the United States have filed a request in New Zealand seeking the extradition of Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom and three of his colleagues for allegedly letting Internet users share copyrighted material on their website.
The papers were filed in Auckland’s North Shore District Court, according to the Associated Press.
These four men have been accused by US prosecutors of making money at the expense of musicians and film makers by facilitating illegal downloads.
Megaupload website has been accused of causing revenue losses of more than $500m to copyright holders before it was shut down in January.
The US is seeking their extradition to on charges of racketeering, money laundering, copyright infringement.
Apart from Kim Dotcom (Schmitz), extradition has been sought of Finn Batato, Mathias Ortmann and Bram van der Kolk.
While Dotcom’s lawyers argue that their client is innocent as he only offered online storage space, Megaupload founder said he would fight his possible extradition to the US.
