Hitachi Ltd and Hyundai Electronics Ltd are considering linking up for a joint chip development deal. The Japanese chipmaker has been in talks with South Korean conglomerate about transferring technology used by LG Semicon, which Hyundai took over last week. Hitachi has worked on DRAM development with LG Semicon since 1989. Hyundai CEO Kim Young-hwan, in an interview with Reuters confirmed that talks were taking place, but cautioned that they were at an early stage.

One immediate fall-out of the Hyundai’s LG takeover is that the companies’ two British plants will be closed. Hyundai has a plant in Scotland. LG’s facility in Newport, Wales was never actually completed. Work stopped before the plant was fitted out with production equipment last year and was never resumed.
