Marking a renewed attempt to loosen Sun Microsystems Inc’s vice- like grip on the ISP market, Hewlett-Packard Co has unveiled a clutch of new servers including two PA-RISC-based Unix servers and two Intel Corp Xeon-powered Net Servers running Windows NT. The new Unix servers include a low-end A-Class series code-named Staccato which uses the 32-bit PA-7300 RISC (CI No 3,446) and the PA-8250-basedR-Class. 20 A-Class models can be racked together with 40Gb RAM and 360Gbdisk. The R-Class comes with 4Gb memory and 9Gb disk space. Both Unix servers support Ignite/UX, a feature enabling HP-UX sites to be mirrored and replicated across multiple sites and an integrated HP Secure Web Console, which provides remote server access so that ISPs can manage servers from any suitable location. The Web Console will also be available as a separate add-on box. HP claims similar facilities will be available for Net Server LPr and LXr8000 systems, designed for low-to-medium sized applications. No word on pricing.
