Sharp Corp says it has developed a 28-inch, wide-screen LCD television, the world’s largest, able to support the digital high-definition broadcasts scheduled to start in Japan next year. The company is the industry leader in LCD TVs and is already selling 20-inch and smaller versions.
The new model features a 28-inch, active-matrix, full-color LCD. Its 16 x 9.6- inch screen size is equivalent to the effective display area of a 30-inch CRT TV, the statement said. The resolution is about 3 million pixels, or 3.2 times that of a 20-inch model, and the display’s viewing angles are as wide as a CRT TV.
At only 58.6mm thick and weighting 9.3kg, the TV is designed to be wall mounted. Sales in Japan will start in January with the sets initially retailing for about one million yen ($9,430).
