IBM Corp and Lotus Development Corp say their LotusXSL processor is one of the first implementations of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)’s extensible stylesheet language (XSL). XSL is designed to transform XML to HTML or other formats for viewing with a browser or other web client. With LotusXSL, which is packaged as a JavaBean, a change to a single stylesheet modifies how data is presented without changing the data itself. If one stylesheet is applied to a range of data sources – a collection of legacy databases tied to a single web front-end, for example – the presentation of that data will be consistent regardless of which client device is used to access it. IBM has made the prototype available for free download from its alphaWorks web sites. The technology was developed by Lotus researchers who worked directly with the W3C to create the XSL spec.
