As the spate of fatal school gun attacks continues in the US, computer game makers have jumped to the defense of their industry and declared that violent games are not to blame for such incidents. Recent months have seen several school yard killings in Springfield, Oregon, Jonesboro, Arkansas, Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Paducah, Kentucky. But Doug Lowenstein, president of the Interactive Digital Software Association said: Video games are not the source of violence in our society. Lowenstein has just published the findings of a survey which shows 40% of US consumers think computer games are the most exciting way to spend their recreation time, ahead of watching television, reading books and surfing the internet. Following the Jonesboro shooting in April, Governor Mick Huckabee requested that violence in computer games should be monitored.
