British Telecommunications Plc is to launch what it reckons is the first subscription-free internet access service designed specifically for small and medium sized enterprises. The UK incumbent telco says it will target the 66% of small businesses with less than 10 employees that it says do not have internet access, which it estimates to be about a million companies. A portal catered to these companies’ needs is likely. It’s surprising that BT has not done something similar earlier, as companies will use the internet during peak times more often than consumers, when dialup is four times more expensive. BT will launch the service officially on September 28.
