Amazon.com is planning to inaugurate a 1mn-square-foot fulfilment centre in Middletown, Delaware.
The Middletown facility will be Amazon’s second fulfilment centre in Delaware. Prior to the new facility, Amazon opened its fulfilment centre in New Castle in 1997.
Delaware Economic Development Office has awarded Amazon $3.47m from the Delaware Strategic Fund to support the fulfilment centre’s expansion.
A separate grant for up to $4m from the Delaware New Jobs Infrastructure Fund will be used to build extensions of public roads to serve the project, improve traffic flow and provide access to additional properties for future economic development, said Amazon.
Amazon will also benefit from a real estate tax abatement from the town of Middletown for the next 10 years.
The new facility is expected to be complete this fall.
The fulfilment centres in Delaware are operated by Amazon.com.dedc.
Amazon Global Customer Fulfillment vice-president Dave Clark said Amazon looks forward to opening its second facility in Delaware this year, creating 850 new jobs in the state.
