Toshiba is not the only one with doubts about the 16Mb DRAM market, despite a recent upturn in prices. Reuters did a poll and found that the major Japanese semiconductor makers are taking a bleak view. Market prospects are as cloudy as ever, said an NEC Corp spokesperson. South Korean makers could start a massive sell-off of their inventories at any time. Hitachi Ltd said it had plans to cut its output of dynamic RAM chips by about 20% over the next few months. And both Fujitsu Ltd and Mitsubishi Electric Corp are said to be planning major cuts in capital investment for chips this year.
