Microsoft India’s retail website slowed down on Monday following a cyber attack by a group called Evil Shadow Team.

The software giant’s retail website (www.microsoftstore.co.in), which sells Microsoft products, showed an error message, which read "The Microsoft Store India is currently unavailable. Microsoft is working to restore access as quickly as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused."

It is expected that hackers, who claimed to be Chinese, may have had access to the usernames and passwords of customers who use the site to purchase Microsoft products.

The information was reportedly stored in plain text file, without any encryption.

Reports reveal the screen shots were posted on a blog run by Evil Shadow Team member 7z1 who informed Reuters that the data had been found unencrypted on the website.

The Indian company Quasar Media, which runs the Indian edition of the Microsoft Store, was said to be investigating the issue.

The financial details of the users are considered to be safe.

Earlier, major websites of the Indian government including that of the country’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) were reportedly hacked.
