Oracle Corp is letting another 600 staff go as its worldwide Y2K business winds down, a source close to the company has revealed to Computergram. However, Oracle spokespeople on both sides of the Atlantic claimed to have no knowledge of the job cuts. If true, the lay-offs would seem to be in addition to the 325 jobs Oracle said it would shed at the time of its fourth quarter results in June 1999 in the need to cut costs as it moves to a more internet-focused sales model (CI No 3,683). The 600 additional job cuts means that over 2% of Oracle’s workforce will have departed this year. Despite the lay-offs, Oracle has said it will continue to hire selectively in key areas such as customer relationship management and e-business.
