With its eye on the European set-top box market and internet and digital television content providers, Nokia Oy’s Multimedia Network Terminals has bought Swedish terminal and software maker, User Interface Design (UID) for an undisclosed sum. Nokia, which already makes set-top boxes for satellite and cable network operators will use UID’s technology and 44 staff to integrate by early next year digital video broadcasting and TCP/IP protocols into one set-top box for the European market. Nokia will also announce in October or November of this year terminals that act as a single gateway to at least two networks, for example cable and satellite. Nokia has worked with UID on developing media and communications software applications since 1994.
