28.4% of EU households are now connected to the Internet (December 2000) whereas in March 2000 this figure was only 18.3% so Europe is catching up fast on US Internet growth.

Three Member States, including The Netherlands and Denmark, have over 50% of households connected to the Internet. Member States with the lowest Internet penetration have an average of 15.2%, this figure being 4.2% in March. This sends an important message according to Perogianni as this is a high growth rate and will have implications for healthcare as a form of information and commerce.

With five EU Member States having more than doubled Internet penetration within six months this has contributed to the EU having more Internet users now than the US.
