Samsung Electronics Co is expected to follow IBM Corp with a commitment to silicon-on insulator chip technology today (Monday) that could boost the performance of its Alpha chips. Reports suggest that the technology will enable Samsung to boost the clock speed on Alpha parts to 1GHz and beyond using 0.25 micron process technology. Silicon-on-insulator aims at reducing the problem of electricity absorption that silicon is prone to, which can make chips less efficient. Samsung negotiated its Alpha architecture license with Digital Equipment Corp back in February, and in June launched a new unit, Alpha Processor Inc, to promote and develop the architecture.
