Activist group Americans for Computer Privacy (http://www.computerprivacy.org) has kept its promise to blitz the media over encryption regulations (CI No 3,412). Spokesperson Sue Richard says starting Wednesday, Washington, DC-based ACP will spend $1m on TV, print and internet advertising in a bid to raise general awareness of computer privacy issues. The group’s ultimate goal is to change the government’s encryption policy and lift current export restrictions. ACP is also adamantly opposed to FBI proposals to provide third parties with an cryptographic spare key to private citizens’ data (CI No 3,448). None of this should be very surprising, since the group represents the interests of virtually all the big encryption and technology vendors, including 3Com, Cisco, Citrix, Compaq, Intel, Lotus, Netscape, Network Associates, Oracle, RSA Data Security and Sun. รก
