In the increasingly creative war for internet access subscribers, the UK’s Internet Technology Group Plc has found a new value-added service to prefix with the word free. Its internet service provider subsidiary, Freenetname Ltd, launched yesterday, says it will provide subscribers with a free .co.uk domain name and 20mb of web space as long as they continue to use its service. This represents a saving of around 100 pounds ($160), but those wishing to take their free domain name to an alternate provider will have to pay the 94 pounds NIC fees themselves. ITG says it is the UK’s largest independent ISP (one of the few remaining) and is currently in talks to be bought by an as yet unnamed company.
