TCP/IP will outstrip ATM based technology in the field of broadband networking according to a new report from UK telecoms consultant Ovum Ltd. The report suggests that the IP market will grow at more than 70% a year over the next four years and that IP will be the dominant protocol for broadband wide area networking by 2002. Ovum says that customers will use a variety of different protocols depending on individual requirements, with TCP/IP leading the way in multimedia, broadband and real-time communications. The report says the key issues in the broadband network marketplace over the next four years will be the adoption of Ethernet enhancements, the use of ATM within wide area networks, and the adoption of TCP/IP based applications and voice over IP.
