Directors of a US investment company have called off plans to invite councilors from the UK city of Hull to a traditional fish and chips dinner after fears they could end up behind bars. Landtel Communications hoped to lure councilors to a dinner to explain the attractions of its 245m pound offer for a 49% holding in Kingston Communications, a telco that is owned by the city of Hull. But HullÆs furious legal officer Peter Barker threatened to call in the police, claiming that the planned meal contravened the 1889 Public Bodies Corrupt Practices Act. Landtel chairman Lawrence Zimmerman still plans to hold meetings with local councilors and officials – but wonÆt be buying them dinner.
