Cognos and Fujitsu have teamed up to develop and sell business intelligence software in Japan.
Canadian software vendor Cognos is partnering with Fujitsu to develop business intelligence (BI) software that both companies will initially target at the nascent Japanese market for decision support. Ottawa-based Cognos says the move will bolster its access to Japanese enterprises and allow Tokyo based Fujitsu to leverage its BI expertise.
The initial goal of the alliance is to integrate Cognos PowerPlay (the OLAP analysis component of its Cognos Series 7 platform) and Fujitsu’s Symfoware Navigator, which is billed as a scaleable 64-bit information delivery platform for multidimensional data output. Cognos and Fujitsu will also be establishing a collaborative organization to provide support and services to enterprise customers.
The combined offering, which Cognos says will allow a consistent, unified view of business processes and timely delivery of information to users across the enterprise, will initially be targeted at existing and new enterprise customers in Japan. The companies are exploring the possibility of expanding into other regions later.
Fujitsu, along with NEC Corp, is one of Japan’s leading microchip and industrial electronics conglomerates, reporting consolidated revenues of $38 billion in its last fiscal year. Recently, both conglomerates have seen their hardware business, particularly semiconductors and telecoms equipment, hit hard by a weak market and intensified competition from Asian rivals.
As a result, both Fujitsu and NEC are increasingly turning their attention to the computer services business. The service side currently offers more stable profit margins – although competition is this area is becoming more intense as a growing number of firms make the same move.
