The company said yesterday it would deploy 13 central office switches, advanced optical transport technology and network management systems designed for voice and high-speed data transmissions.

Lucent was awarded the work by US engineering and construction giant Bechtel National Inc, which was awarded the contract to rehabilitate and upgrade Iraq’s national network earlier this year by the Coalition Provisional Authority.

The telecoms equipment manufacturer said much of Iraq’s communications network is centralized in Baghdad, where 240,000 out of 540,000 telephone lines are out of service. The Lucent subcontract is directed at restoring this service.

Engineers from Lucent, Bechtel and Iraq’s Telephone and Post Company will begin work next month installing Lucent 5ESS and 5ESS Very Compact Digital Exchange (VCDX) switches, the Metropolis ADM Multiservice Mux, Navis Network management systems.
